Complete and detailed

Hacker Martin, a very accomplished gunsmith, once said "it is impossible to write a good book on building the flintlock, and who is fool enough to try using their instructions?" - Foxfire. This book, however, is more than good enough. It gives detailed instructions and diagrams on every step of building a rifle, from choosing the right wood, to inletting the lock and barrel, to carving and engraving. I've already built a longrifle using this book.

Great old classic and well worth the retail price

This book is a classic reference guide for creating you own Pennsylvania Longrifle.
The book is written based on decades of experience in building these rifles. Additionally, Chuck Dixon who is one of the authors has helped established an annual gunmaker's fair on his farm. This is something akin to the "mecca" of gunbulding and anyone who has even a passing interest in these rifles will want to make at least one trip there.
This book is not a glossy hard bound coffee table edition filled with full page color photos to be admired. In fact, I'm pretty certain there are no photos. The binding is a simple plastic spiral so the book can fully open while lying on your workbench. The pictures are all hand drawn and perfectly mesh with the instruction in the book. There are quaint "old timey" anecdotal stories that give you a sense of the history and culture behind these rifles. But most importantly there is some great information to help the builder work through the process of completing one of these rifles.
Now, sometimes this type of book is eclipsed by a more modern work that incorporates better paper, printing, photography or other aspects, but that's not the case for this book. These rifles are classic folk art that was often (though not always) unpretentious and within reach of our ancestors on the frontier. While none of these books on building these muzzleloaders is a stand alone volume, this book remains down-to-earth and is perfectly suited to the needs of the modern builder.
