The paperback edition is a cruel hoax. It should have zero stars.

This paperback is a sad joke. It is nothing like the hardback that has all the great reviews. There are only a few illustrations and none in color. The text keeps making reference to pages that perhaps refer to the hardback edition. Amazon should refund the purchase price to all those who have ordered this paperback thinking that they were getting the same pages that are in the hardback. Amazon needs to have different reviews for paperback editions. The publisher and Amazon should be deeply embarrassed by this cruel deception.

This edition is very poorly made! Basically copied and pasted off the internet with completely random "illustrations" added in. And then they proudly display it was made in the USA. The pictures that a "Customer" uploaded are from a different book.

The book's title suggests his sympathy to the still-controversial arguments in favor of exploiting the battle's initial successes, transforming the original limited 1918 operation in France into an all-out drive for the fortress city of Metz. Hallas gives full weight to opposing evidence stressing the difficulties of developing tactical victories on the Western Front. The work's principal strength is its vivid presentation, based on first-hand accounts from long-neglected sources, of the nature of frontline combat in the Great War's final stages. Whatever commander John Pershing's doughboys may have lacked in training and equipment, they made up in courage and aggressiveness, Hallas shows. At St. Mihiel no less than on Iwo Jima, uncommon valor was a common virtue.

Hallas has covered one of the more controversial episodes in American military history-General Pershing's assault on the German positions in the St. Mihiel Salient in September 1918. The attack, which caught the German army unprepared, was not exploited by the Allied high command, despite its success on the ground, and U.S. troops were shifted to the Meuse-Argonne front instead of being pushed through the disorganized German forces. Hallas presents postwar criticisms of Allied military leadership while retaining objectivity about the real probability of an untried American army's being able to exploit rapidly its sudden breakthrough. Hallas's recent title, Devil's Anvil: the Assault on Peleliu (LJ 5/1/94), likewise covered a controversial episode in U.S. military history. Very good reading of the war to end all wars. Detail review of what happened in the St. Mihiel area. Good account of brave American combat and courage. Book does not put down any group fighting there. A little bit of how the Germans prepared for the battles against us.

Excellent battle history.

Mr. Hallas makes a convincing case that had it not been for
the machinations of French Field Marshel Foch and other Allies,
the U.S. First Army might have broken through to Metz in
September 1918, shortening the war and saving the 120.000
American casualties in the Meuse-Argonne battle which
followed. This clear combat narrative is enhanced by details
of units and individual soldiers, of one of the finesr armies
America ever fielded. Maps, photos, and Praeger Publications' usual excellent index.
