I was disappointed in all the typos, however, a .cute cozy read. After a while, I stopped reporting them as it was taking away from the pleasure of reading. I can totally empathize with the character after losing weight.The author missed a few emotional turns, but as the weight loss is new to Ellie, I anticipate that being rectified in the continuing series. I generally prefer my British Mystery genre along the lines of Christie and Graham, but found the main characters "fleshed" out well. I have already purchased the second

This paperback is a sad joke. It is nothing like the hardback that has all the great reviews. There are only a few illustrations and none in color. The text keeps making reference to pages that perhaps refer to the hardback edition. Amazon should refund the purchase price to all those who have ordered this paperback thinking that they were getting the same pages that are in the hardback. Amazon needs to have different reviews for paperback editions. The publisher and Amazon should be deeply embarrassed by this cruel deception.

Hallas has covered one of the more controversial episodes in American military history-General Pershing's assault on the German positions in the St. Mihiel Salient in September 1918. The attack, which caught the German army unprepared, was not exploited by the Allied high command, despite its success on the ground, and U.S. troops were shifted to the Meuse-Argonne front instead of being pushed through the disorganized German forces. Hallas presents postwar criticisms of Allied military leadership while retaining objectivity about the real probability of an untried American army's being able to exploit rapidly its sudden breakthrough. Very good reading of the war to end all wars. Detail review of what happened in the St. Mihiel area. Good account of brave American combat and courage. Book does not put down any group fighting there. A little bit of how the Germans prepared for the battles against us.

Excellent battle history.

Mr. Hallas makes a convincing case that had it not been for
the machinations of French Field Marshel Foch and other Allies,
the U.S. First Army might have broken through to Metz in
September 1918, shortening the war and saving the 120.000
American casualties in the Meuse-Argonne battle which
followed. This clear combat narrative is enhanced by details
of units and individual soldiers, of one of the finesr armies
America ever fielded. Maps, photos, and Praeger Publications' usual excellent index.

About the Author
James Joyce, the twentieth century's most influential novelist, was born in Dublin on February 2, 1882. The oldest of ten children, he grew up in a family that went from prosperity to penury because of his father's wastrel behavior. After receiving a rigorous Jesuit education, twenty-year-old Joyce renounced his Catholicism and left Dublin in 1902 to spend most of his life as a writer in exile in Paris, Trieste, Rome, and Zurich. On one trip back to Ireland, he fell in love with the now famous Nora Barnacle on June 16, the day he later chose as "Bloomsday" in his novel "Ulysses. "Nara was an uneducated Galway girl who became his lifelong companion an the mother of his two children. In debt and drinking heavily, Joyce lived for thirty-six years on the Continent, supporting himself first by teaching jobs, then trough the patronage of Mrs. Harold McCormick (Edith Rockerfeller) and the English feminist and editor Harriet Shaw Weaver. His writings include "Chamber music "(1907), "Dubliners "(1914), "A Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man "(1916), "Exiles "(1918), "Ulysses "(1922), "Poems Penyeach "(1927), "Finnegans Wake "(1939), and an early draft of "A Portrait of a Young Man, Stephan Hero "(1944). "Ulysses "required seven years to complete, and his masterpiece, "Finnegans Wake, "took seventeen. Both works revolutionized the form, structure, and content of the novel. Joyce died in Zurich in 1941.

Wonderful and accessible Joyce, pedantic annotations

This is a great place to start with James Joyce, because it is readable and engaging. What at first seems like a slow start is actually a slow burn that bursts into flame at the end. If you've ever doubted whether your life is full, or your love is true, or worried about death or the claims the past makes upon the present, you'll be intrigued by Joyce's treatment of these themes.

You will probably want to ignore the annotations on a first read, though. One is actually a partial spoiler for the ending, which I think is a terrible practice. If you are a tourist in Dublin, you will enjoy knowing just where everything takes place--and with these annotations, you will--but for anyone else, it is frustrating to follow a footnote only to find out on what corner of Dublin an aforementioned statue sits. Similarly, for antique furniture enthusiasts, it may be interesting to find out, in two separate footnotes, that peirglasses and cheval glasses are both different kinds of mirrors, but is it worth interrupting the narrative? Of the hundred or so footnotes, only a handful provide useful information for a non-specialist, and even these can be inferred from context. The only one that might be hard to guess is that "delicate," in a certain context, means stricken with consumption, which we call tuberculosis--so now that I've given you that one, you can ignore the rest until your second, more scholarly reading.

A Masterpiece

Reynolds Price called it the greatest short story written in English. Carson McCullers reread it every Christmas. I have read James Joyce's masterpiece "The Dead" from his book DUBLINERS at least a half dozen times. I just reread it, and as usual, it made my eyes burn. It is one of those rare stories that, when you finish it, you call up those people you love and those who love literature to make sure they have read it too.

The story, set in Dublin, covers one evening during the Christmas season when two sisters, the Misses Morkan, Julia and Kate, hold their annual dance, the event of the season and not to be missed. Their nephew Gabriel and his wife Gretta are of course invited. Gabriel is pompous and, to use a current expression, full of himself as he gives his usual speech at the event. The last 4 or 5 pages of this rather long-- although there is not one sentence too many-- story contain some of the most moving language you will encounter in English. Joyce makes a sad, profound statement about love, life and death and asks the question of how well do we really know those people closest to us.

The story became the director John Huston's last film by the same name (1987). He cast his daughter Anjelica as Gretta. Tenor Frank Patterson, who left us far too soon, sang that glorious song "The Lass of Aughrim" in the movie that is almost as good as Joyce's story.

Everyone who loves literature should read this perfect story.

A sweeping adventure! Another Mercer winner.

Philip Mercer has become one of my favorite characters, and this adventure is another in the series, perhaps the most involved plot so far. Mercer is asked to look into the collapse of a mine outside of Las Vegas, only to find things are far more complicated than a mine collapse. Numerous attempts are made on Mercer's life, and he meets a beautiful stranger, the woman, Tisha. Enigmatic, beautiful, dedicated, intelligent, Mercer realizes in Tisha he has an unusual find. This book has it all. A hidden oriental order that can predict catastrophic future events. Politics. Intrigue. Even romance. All in a quickly moving, yet highly believable plot. Very enjoyable, with an end that will move you.
