Book one of Asimov's epic Foundation/Empire series

I am a huge Asimov fan - I will never forgive him (and Heinlein as well) for dying on me. I have read the original Foundation Trilogy, and I re-read after it had expanded to six books. After he died, I was researching his writings and came across a memo that he had written that outlined his entire Foundation/Empire series. I was surprised to find out that not only had the Foundation series expanded to 7 books, but that it was merely a subset (the last of three in the entire series) to this greater series. I am going to the trouble of writing this, and listing the 13 books here, to share this knowledge with other rabid Asimov fans. Here is the entire list:

1 The Complete Robot (1982) [and/or I, Robot (1950)]

2 Caves of Steel (1954) This is the first of my robot novels.

3 The Naked Sun (1957) The second robot novel.

4 The Robots of Dawn (1983) The third robot novel.

5 Robots and Empire (1985) The fourth robot novel.

6 The Currents of Space (1952) This is the first of my [Galactic] Empire novels.

7 The Stars, Like Dust (1951) The second [Galactic] Empire novel.

8 Pebble in the Sky (1950) The third [Galactic] Empire novel and my first novel.

9 Prelude to Foundation (1988) This is the first Foundation novel.

10 Forward the Foundation (1993) This is the second Foundation novel.

11 Foundation (1951) This is now the third Foundation novel but most of the world knows this book as the first book of the original Foundation Trilogy. Actually, it began as a collection of four short stories, originally published between 1942 and 1944, plus an introductory section written for the book in 1949.

12 Foundation and Empire (1952) This is the fourth Foundation novel, made from two short stories, originally published in 1945.

13 Second Foundation (1953) This is the fifth Foundation novel, made from two short stories, originally published in 1948 and 1949.

14 Foundation's Edge (1982) This is the sixth Foundation novel.

15 Foundation and Earth (1986) This is the seventh Foundation novel.

I have finished the first book, and am currently on the 4th of the Robot novels (#5 on the list). I have been amazed so far at how much the Robot novels, which I had not previously read in completion, add to the story of Foundation and Empire.

Re the book reviewed here, "Complete Robot", Asimov comments that either it or the 1950 "I, Robot" is acceptable, but "Complete Robot" is way better - it really *is* complete. It is a huge book, and contains *all* his Robot short stories and novellas. You don't necessarily have to read *every* story for Foundation & Empire background, but of course you will, if you are an Asimov lover like me :)

Great place to introduce yourself to Asimov's world....

While it doesn't contain every single one of Isaac Asimov's robot short stories (he wrote a few after this was published), 'The Complete Robot' is still a valuable collection for all sci-fi fans. These stories span four decades and were scattered amongst a whole range of different publications, so it's definitely worthwhile to have them all collected in one place. Asimov was a fantastic science fiction writer, able to convey some deep and thought-provoking ideas without sacrificing readability, and if you haven't introduced yourself to his work yet, this is as good a place as any to start.

The first half of the collection breaks the stories up into groups based on different types of robots: non-human robots, computer like "immobile" robots, humanoid robots, etc. Grouping the stories this way showcases how vivid Asimov's imaginations was, as he envisages a wide variety of different types of robots designed for specific tasks (companion robots, story-tellers, mind-readers, robotic cars, and so on). The second half covers Asimov's longer running story series; Powell and Donovan, Susan Calvin, plus two longer stories set further into the future.

As many have noted, the Susan Calvin stories are among the best, partly because she is so fascinating and well-drawn a character (Asimov notes he "fell in love" with her), and also because these ten stories have a chronology about them, as we get to follow the same characters over the course of many years. Of the Calvin stories, I particularly enjoyed 'Liar!' and 'Feminine Intuition'. Of the others, the touching but disquietening 'Someday' has always been a favourite, as has 'Bicentennial Man', which I was pleased to see was nothing like the overly sappy and sentimental Robin Williams movie....

The collection includes a short introduction by Asimov, providing some insight into how and why he decided to write robot stories, as well as the impact his stories had on the literary and scientific community. Each section also includes a brief comment by Asimov describing the characters and robot types therein. For the hardcore fan, there is also a bibliography listing the date and place of publication of each story, in case you want to seek these other collections out.

In all, a great collection of interesting and imaginative robot stories. Serious fans will be delighted just to have these stories collected in one place, while it also provides excellent bite-size introductions for those new to Asimov's work. Definitely one for sci-fi readers of all stripes to seek out.

Complete and detailed

Hacker Martin, a very accomplished gunsmith, once said "it is impossible to write a good book on building the flintlock, and who is fool enough to try using their instructions?" - Foxfire. This book, however, is more than good enough. It gives detailed instructions and diagrams on every step of building a rifle, from choosing the right wood, to inletting the lock and barrel, to carving and engraving. I've already built a longrifle using this book.

Great old classic and well worth the retail price

This book is a classic reference guide for creating you own Pennsylvania Longrifle.

The book is written based on decades of experience in building these rifles. Additionally, Chuck Dixon who is one of the authors has helped established an annual gunmaker's fair on his farm. This is something akin to the "mecca" of gunbulding and anyone who has even a passing interest in these rifles will want to make at least one trip there.

This book is not a glossy hard bound coffee table edition filled with full page color photos to be admired. In fact, I'm pretty certain there are no photos. The binding is a simple plastic spiral so the book can fully open while lying on your workbench. The pictures are all hand drawn and perfectly mesh with the instruction in the book. There are quaint "old timey" anecdotal stories that give you a sense of the history and culture behind these rifles. But most importantly there is some great information to help the builder work through the process of completing one of these rifles.

Now, sometimes this type of book is eclipsed by a more modern work that incorporates better paper, printing, photography or other aspects, but that's not the case for this book. These rifles are classic folk art that was often (though not always) unpretentious and within reach of our ancestors on the frontier. While none of these books on building these muzzleloaders is a stand alone volume, this book remains down-to-earth and is perfectly suited to the needs of the modern builder.
